From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guidelines

[edit]

Article structure

[edit]

This is not yet decided, just a proposal: Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ)'s proposal:

It should be : Infobox, Introduction, Date, History, Celebration

Titles

[edit]

i suggest we pin down the formula for titles of holidays for different countries. the name would be in the native language of that country and in the case of there being other country articles for the same holiday then the name would be followed by the country in parenthesis. i.e., Instead of Midsummer in Latvia it would be jani, and if another country also had a holiday named jani then you can specify the holiday as Jani (Latvia). maybe this is stating the obvious. Some thing 00:39, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

if there are very many countries with holidays by the same name then consider either merging them into one article (if they are basically the same) or creating a category for them. Some thing 03:54, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

also it might be a good idea to mention the English equivalent some where in the introduction to ensure easy wikisearches by those unfamiliar with that countries name for an international holiday. Some thing 21:10, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infoboxes

TypeCultural
SignificanceA celebration of being thankful for what one has

Datesecond Monday in October (Canada), fourth Thursday in November (USA)
2024 datedate missing (please add)
Related toChristmas and New Year's Day which conclude the North American holiday season, and Columbus Day which coincides with Canada's Thanksgiving

NOTE: If you use this template: {{Infobox holiday}}, do {{subst:Infobox holiday}} and then change the stuff to your liking (and add stuff too if you need). A good idea given by Neutrality was to change the colors depending on holiday (blue/white for Jewish, green/red for Christmas, national colors for national holidays, etc.). Table by Neutrality. (By the way, the table looks better on the page than here).

Articles this table is currently being used in:

I've changed the infobox template {{Infobox holiday}}. It looks like what you see to the right. I'm in the process of adding them to holiday pages. Your help would be appreciated. For information on using the Infobox, go to its talk page. User:Tariqabjotu 14:26, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

it would be advantageous to have an infobox script in which the color can be manually set to suit the holiday. Some thing 21:51, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

[edit]

Just a general overview of the article, like we have in most articles on Wikipedia. Just mention the most important stuff covered in all the other sections (see Wikipedia:Lead section)

Date

[edit]

First of all, describe when the date is (e.g. 4th of July), and the significance of that date (e.g. when the United States declaration of independence was signed). If the date changes (e.g. Jewish holidays), put the date on the calendar where it's stationary (e.g. Purim on the 14th of Adar) and the dates for the next couple of years (we might want a table similar to that which is on Rosh Hashanah). Also, the reason why the date changes if there is one (e.g. Lunar calendar or first Monday of month).

History

[edit]

Put the history of this holiday. What this holiday means. We might also want to add pop culture references to this holiday if there are any. This can, of course, be multiple sections.

Celebration/Traditions/Customs/Rituals

[edit]

What people used to do on this holiday? What do they do now?

Controversies and Criticism

[edit]

Important news events related to the holiday. Criticism of current practices related to the holiday.

Remember to write in the proper style for an encyclopedic article. Basically, most articles should have been written in this format already, as it's just most logical.

Perhaps we should add some more sections

Category structure

[edit]

This is a retailoring of Ilγαηερ's (Tαlκ) proposal and proposal 3a. i’ve tried to specify a detailed hierarchical model that will work with much of the existing categories. its still pretty rough but you get the idea. Some thing 13:18, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

General issues. articles can hopefully be dispersed in to as many appropriate subcategories as possible. for example there should never be an actual holiday with 'category:holidays' on it. to be more specific i think the secular holidays may need more dispersal. 'national holidays' should only contain common national holiday titles. specific country holidays could go within its subcategories. Some thing 21:20, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
